Let’s Talk Internships With Marjorie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Strath chapter.

Name: Marjorie Hughes

Course: BA Hons International Business

Hey Marjorie! You are currently in third year of your business degree at Strathclyde. Are you actively seeking internship opportunities at the moment? If so what field are you looking to work in?

Hi Caitlin, yes I am looking for an internship for over the summer! Ideally, I’d like an internship in marketing as that’s the field that I feel have the most knowledge in and would love to get some marketing industry experience!

So, you want to search for internship opportunities in Glasgow- what is the first 3 things you would do?

First, I would make sure I’m happy with my CV. Tailoring your CV to the specific sector you’re searching for is key. Then I would do a search on websites such as Target Jobs, Strathclyde’s Prospects, LinkedIn and Indeed. These sites display numerous vacancies all at your fingertips! Finally, apply! Carefully looking over any application forms, cover letters and CV’s that you have provided the employer with. First impressions are so important.

For most job positions, a CV is often the first thing that must be submitted! What are your top 3 tips for creating a good CV?

Make sure that your CV is nicely presented and flows well. It shows that you have thought about it and are an organised individual. Next, ensure that you are professional but also allow a little of your personality to show, what makes you different? Finally, showcase the skills and knowledge, demonstrating why you should be invited for an interview!

Building a network of professionals is crucial to get recognised in business these days. How do you build up your business network?

I have been building my business network over this last year through LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a great tool for professionals to share knowledge, successes, and stories with others. It allows you to list your skills, work experience and interests. You can connect with colleagues and friends past and present who can endorse you for the skills you have listed!

Ah, you previously mentioned LinkedIn! This is a popular website for both students and business professionals! What are your top 3 tips on creating an eye-catching profile which is likely to get noticed?

First, have a professional looking picture, not a selfie and not a club photo that you’ve tried to cut your friend out of. An employer is then able to put a face to the name and enhances their opinion of you and your interest. Get your colleagues to endorse your skills, this shows that others believe that you possess these skills. Provide information on your work experience. It’s sometimes not obvious what a role entails so go into detail about what the role involves, it will give an employer insight into your daily tasks.

Finally, it is a vital requirement these days for the majority of employers to conduct an interview prior to hiring a candidate! How do you usually prepare for an interview? And what fashion advice would you give to someone who has an interview lined up soon?

When preparing for an interview it is essential to do some research, make sure you are aware of the company history and values. This will impress the interview and will show your interest. Making sure you have a positive attitude and show open body language throughout the interview. Always dress professional unless suggested otherwise. Black is always an easy go-to option, whether it be a black dress, blazer, skirt or trousers, it always looks good!

Thanks Marjorie for your tips!
