Top 5 Struggles of Painting Your Own Nails

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

While painting your own nails is cheaper than going to the nail salon to get the perfect manicure, there are so many difficulties that rise about. Not only does your nail polish never seem to be at the same smooth consistency of those at the nail salon, but it’s either clumpy from the heat or too watered down from sitting and settling for so long in your drawer. Every girl knows the struggles of painting her nails and getting so fed up with the results, you end up spending the money on a professional nail salon anyway. Here are the top five struggles girls go through while painting their nails:

1. The nail polish is everywhere but your nail This affects me greatly. I’ve been painting my nails since I was six years old and I still can’t seem to keep the polish on my nail and not on my fingers. I can’t even begin to explain the amount of times I’ve spilled nail polish on my floor!

2. Going to bed with what you thought were dry nails Please tell me I’m not the only one this happens to. I’ll paint my nails well before I go to sleep and I’ll swear up and down that they’re dry, but somehow, I wake up with smudged nails and dry polish all over my sheets!

3. Smudges! In general, a smudge in your nail polish is the most likely thing to affect your perfect manicure. The amount of times I’ve smudged my nails by simply walking to another room, is almost ridiculous. I’ve never noticed how often my fingernails touch random objects around my house!

4. Walking with wet toenails

I truly think that painting your toenails is a lot easier than painting your fingernails. Your feet touch fewer things! However, walking around with wet toenails is a recipe for disaster! Even if you do that wobble-like walk, your nails still end up smudged somehow. I’ve found spots on nail polish all over my rug even though I thought I was being careful!

5. Chipping Last but certainly not least, does anyone else feel like your nails chip a lot sooner if you paint them yourselves rather than getting a manicure? I feel like once the day after I paint my nails rolls around, I’m looking at cracked nail polish and I’m ready to paint them all over again!

I am a Junior at Stony Brook University majoring in Linguistics and minoring in English and Writing and Rhetoric. I love reading and traveling to places I've never been before. I often go on adventures, such as hiking and finding new towns and cities to explore. These moments truly inspire me to continue writing, especially about the different places I've gone to and the experiences I've had. Ever since I was a young girl, I've always wanted to become a published author!
