The Stony Brook March for Unity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

After President Trump’s Executive Order on Immigration affected Stony Brook University in such a personal way with the detainment of SBU Ph.D. student Vahideh Rasekhi, students, faculty, and local community members marched in support of their Muslim brothers and sisters in the Seawolf community and refugees affected by the ban. President Samuel Stanley released a statement expressing Stony Brook’s values, “I want to reaffirm Stony Brook University’s unwavering commitment, which is anchored in our strong values of diversity, access, and inclusiveness, to creating a campus environment that welcomes all….As we move forward as a unified but diverse campus community, it is critical that the University remains a place where the free exchange of ideas must be safeguarded but done in a way that respects our differences. Let’s continue working together in creating a strong and united Stony Brook Community.”
