Let me start by identifying where upstate NY actually begins. Most Long Islander’s idea that anything north of the Bronx is considered upstate is so WRONG. I define upstate as north of Albany and east of Rochester. My particular town gets in with some serious snow every year (4-5 feet), and bitter cold (-35 F wind chill), so needless to say, I’ve accumulated a fair amount of winter gear. However for my fellow first year students who unlike me have never experienced even SNOW, this is a short list of some necessities.

Double Layer Winter Jacket: The point of the double layer is that the inner layer is a thermal protector and the outer layer is a waterproof windbreaker, giving you complete protection from the elements. Plus, the layer can come apart to be used separately depending on the weather.

Lace Up Waterproof Boots: Beside the obvious benefit of waterproof, lace up boots are very important. The lace feature allows you to adjust the snugness of the boot depending on the thickness of your sock, which could change based on the temperature.

Fleece Lined Leggings: These can be worn by themselves or layered under jeans or even snow pants, and are winterized version of everyone’s favorite “lazy pant.”

Tech Smart Gloves: These are amazing for using your phone outside in the cold, the tips of the fingers are designed to work with touch-screens!

Large Knit Infinity Scarves: As functional as they are adorable, large or chunky knit scarves protect your neck, lower face, and even ears without coming unwrapped like a regular scarf would
