On Wednesday October 21st during Campus Life Time, a peaceful die-in protest took place in the SAC Plaza in honor of the 122 unarmed black Americans killed by police in 2015. Organized by Courtney Lall and Jamie Abudu-Solo, each student held a piece of paper with the name of each lost soul. The Black Lives Matter movement is no stranger to the Stony Brook Campus. A peaceful protest was held in November of 2015, in solidarity with the University of Missouri protests at the time, and attended by President of Stony Brook University Samuel Stanley and Dean of Students Timothy Ecklund.
President Stanley relased a statement regarding the die-in: “What is happening around race relations across our country today is having a galvanizing effect on our students – as it should. I am proud that our students are engaged and involved in this important, timely conversation, and the university is working closely with them to make sure that their on-campus experience is supportive and safe.”
Founded by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi in 2014, the Black Lives Matter movement will continue to impact the diverse Stony Brook community and give a voice to those who feel voiceless.
