6 Unapologetic “Girl Power” TV Shows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

TV is a wonderful thing but finding shows that represent women in positive and nuanced light can be difficult. Keeping that in mind, here’s just some of the shows that are evolving with the times and star awesome female characters.

1. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)

After being freed from a doomsday cult perpetual optimist Kimmy tries to reclaim her life and does her best to maintain her can-do attitude.

2. Girls (HBO)This brutally honest HBO dramedy follows four girls as they try to navigate post college life and learn about love, failure, friendship, self-acceptance and adulthood.

3. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW)Rebecca drops her seemingly idyllic life for a shot at real happiness. Rebecca spends each episode mocking female stereotypes, talking frankly about her insecurities, and showing the importance of going after what you want even if it makes you seem crazy.

4. Bones (FOX) Dr. Temperance Brennan spends her days solving crimes, saving lives and serving justice. Brennan proves intelligence and bravery are a girl’s greatest assets.

5. Broad City (Comedy Central)This show has one of the best examples of female friendship on TV. It chronicles the misadventures of Ilana and Abbi, two friends looking out for each other as they try to navigate the world.

6. Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central)  Amy fights sexism and is unapologetically herself in this skit-based comedy series.
