6 Spring Break Destinations in the Northeast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

If you’re looking for a little spring break getaway that doesn’t involve flying south, pack the car with your friends and take a road trip somewhere fun and close to home!

1. Newport, RI

On the coast of Rhode Island is a town that exemplifies lives of the wealthy in the gilded age. Check out the beautiful mansions in Newport, take a stroll down the Cliff Walk and admire the panoramic views of the ocean, and visit the oldest lending library in America to see its history and showcases exhibitions.

2. Philadelphia, PA

See the historic sights in Philly this spring! The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Museum of the American Revolution, and the Franklin Institute are all great attractions to visit. Catch the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show to see some blooms that will remind you why spring is your favorite season. Make sure you get a famous cheesesteak–or try five and find your favorite on the Philly Cheesesteak Tour– while in the city they were named after.

3. Vermont

There are so many villages, waterfalls, parks, and sights in Vermont to visit. If you and your friends are up for winter sports, find a mountain and shred some Northeast snow. For a true Vermont experience, fins a maple farm and taste maple syrups and treats. Stop at some of the locations on the Vermont Cheese Trail and learn about the process of cheesemaking while enjoying freshly made cheddars. And of course, a trip to Vermont would not be complete without Ben and Jerry’s, so take a factory tour and enjoy a scoop of your favorite flavor of ice cream.

4. Boston, MA

The city of Boston has so much to offer year-round. This spring, head to the New England Aquarium and learn about amazing aquatic animals. Check out the very interactive Museum of Science, see an artistic Blue Man Group show, appreciate artwork at the Museum of Fine Arts, shop at Faneuil Hall, or take a tour of one of many college campuses in the city. The possibilities are endless, so bump this up on your list of future travel destinations.

5. Buffalo, NY

For an upstate adventure, travel to Buffalo. Visit the shops and restaurants at Elmwood Village, go to a Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens exhibition, and ice skate at Canalside. Eat all of the chicken wings in Buffalo and find your favorite recipe. In only a thirty minute drive, you could head to Niagara Falls and see New York’s breathtaking natural wonder– so don’t forget your poncho.

6. North Fork, NY

On Long Island’s East End, you will find endless vineyards where you can taste wine; beaches like Orient Beach State Park, where you can see ocean views and four lighthouses; and the historic village of Greenport, where you can enjoy shops and seafood restaurants alongside a marina.

If you live or attend school in the Northeast, you don’t have to head south for an exciting spring break when so much is offered right here. Start planning your spring break trip to see the beautiful sights only a few hours’ drive from home!
