3 Reasons Why Earth and Space Science Education Is an Awesome Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

Looking to teach but can’t pick a subject? Consider earth and space science education! Coming to Stony Brook, I knew I wanted to teach but I was having trouble picking what science I would study to become a teacher. I wanted to write this article to help people who were indecisive like I was because I know at the time something like this would definitely have helped. I struggled along the way but I am definitely happy with my decision to study earth science. Keep reading for just a couple of the reasons why!

1.You get a scholarship just for studying this major.

Yup, you read this correctly! New York State awards Earth and Space Science Education majors with a scholarship equivalent to the tuition rate. All you have to do is complete a few application must haves, but trust me they are extremely doable. This major is super rewarding!

2. It’s a mixture of all the sciences.

I enjoy science, but my first semester I couldn’t decide which one would suit me best.  Each science brings something different, but earth science is a little bit of everything.  It includes biology, chemistry, geology, physics, atmospheric science and even math. You get to dip your feet into the waters of each science instead of being completely submerged in just one.  Nothing ever gets old with this major because there’s always something different to learn!

3. Major courses end up filling many of the SBC’s!

Since this major is a mixture of so many different classes, you end up knocking out several SBC’s. Sometimes trying to find so many different classes to fill the various categories is tedious.  Luckily, within this major, you won’t have trouble tackling that!
