Things I Learned While Getting Mental Health First Aid Certified

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stevens chapter.

For Stevens students, getting mental health first aid certified is a fantastic experience, and here are some things I have learned as a result.
    1.    Women are predisposed to anxiety – it’s not clear if women are predisposed to anxiety because of our genetics or because the world is scary for women but I found it interesting.
    2.    1 out of 10 people have been diagnosed with a mental illness – it’s good to recognize this because it can help eliminate stigma.
    3.    It’s important to reach out to people displaying signs of struggling, but never force someone to open up to you. – if you notice any sudden changes in your friends let them know you noticed it.
    4.    You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink – if your friend is not ready to receive help it’s okay don’t force them (unless it’s a crisis) but support them and let them know you’re there for them if they need to talk.
