Could you give up the comfort and luxury of your own home in favor of helping others? Last year, I met two incredible young men who were doing just that. How? By renovating an old school bus, traveling across the country, and volunteering their time toward worthwhile causes. I met them near Orlando, Florida while serving at Give Kids the World, but since then they’ve been everywhere. The crew on the bus has changed, but their mission has remained the same. According to their website, the project is “a journey to serve others, seek adventure, simplify life, defy convention, and discover America.”

They call their bus the “LOST Bus,” with “LOST” serving as an abbreviation for the phrase “Lending Our Services Traveling.” Their services are needed wherever they go, but it was their positive attitudes and outgoing personalities that struck me the most. Their energy was electric each day during the week I saw them, regardless of the time of day or the task we were performing. They greeted cleaning tables in the dining room with as much enthusiasm as supervising an archery game. They were always smiling, and everyone who met them, kids and adults alike, was charmed.

Their openness and willingness to serve are not things I’ll soon forget. So, to Brannon and Blake, the two amazing guys I was lucky enough to cross paths with for a few days, thanks for teaching me that life is about more than what you have. Life is about what you do for others. There’s no doubt in my mind that your positivity and aid have changed so many lives for the better. You certainly changed mine. Since I stood on the roof of the bus, it has been passed along to a new crew of individuals looking to positively affect the world.
