Be a Sunflower Amidst the Snow

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Vincent chapter.

As this weekend is a beautiful time to spread love to the people we care about the most, and share moments with significant others, it is also a time to realize that you are a beautiful person and deserve a full future. Similar to a sunflower, we are each blooming to become the best version of ourselves and for the future. Never settle or rush, because there is someone out there who was made to meet wonderful you. While we wait for that person who makes our hearts skip a beat, it is important to grow as an individual who is prepared to share their passion with another.

The first petal of growth is to find your own individual passions and values, apart from those that are from influence by others. It is important to have your own point of view and ideals to stand firm in your own beliefs about the world around us. Pursue your passion as well, for no one else will be able to do this for you. Be adventurous and try new things, because life is never guaranteed, but we can make the most of it while we can.

“You deserve to be happy. You deserve to live a life you are excited about. Don’t let others make you forget that.” – Himanshu Shekhar

Bringing your own unique expressions to a relationship is a blessing rather than a hindrance. You can share the things that you love with someone who can embrace everything that you are, while you also do the same for them.

The second petal of growth is to remember that you are more than your past. Although the past can shape the way we see the present, it doesn’t need to define you. People can always rise above their difficulties and struggles that may have held them back at some point in their lives. If anyone has the audacity to refuse you based on uncontrollable circumstances, then they were never right in the first place. Anyone should be able to accept how circumstances have made you into the beautiful individual that you are.

The third petal of growth is to allow your heart to be open to the possibility of love. This may be the most difficult step of all, because while we are opening to this great possibility there is also a chance that we are opening ourselves to a great deal of pain and heartbreak.

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy – the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” – Brene Brown

More importantly, don’t ever shut yourself down from the possibility of shining your light even brighter than before. By learning to understand that no one is without their vulnerable emotions, we can better identify and explain our own feelings to someone we deeply care for. Though their will be rough times and inevitable heart brake, it is brief and worth the lifetime that could exist with the right individual.

So, to all my sunflowers out in the crowd: Do not worry, because your time will come to shine your light with another person. Even if it is a silent snow for the meantime, you have a lot to offer as an individual with passions and values all your own. Always remember how truly unforgettable you are.
