“New Year’s Resolutions.” This phrase can either excite people or make them cringe at the thought. There are easier ways to keep your resolutions that you’ve made to ensure a healthy change in your life. Here are 7 ways to help you keep your New Year Resolutions.
1. Start small
Most people make a long list of resolutions and expect to tackle them all at the start of the gun. However, that is not as practical as starting with small, more reachable resolutions.
2. Take it one month at a time
An easier way to keep resolutions is to split up your resolutions into different months. It seems a lot easier to make a goal that you can focus on and then move on to another or keep adding on throughout the year.
3. Making resolutions on this day should not be different from any other day
Just because it is the start of the New Year, it should not mean that there has to be extra pressure to make resolutions and be this person to the outside world that you may not be. Even though it is after the first, do it now and conquer it.
4. Write it down
Use a pen and paper or digitally with your computer or phone to write down your resolutions. It is almost like making a contract with yourself to remind yourself of what you want to do and why you want to do it.
5. Gradually change
Stopping something that you love cold turkey may not be the most effective way to keep the absence in your life. You might want to think about laying off one step at a time and then finally be done with something that you may think is toxic in your life or that you want to work on.
6. Don’t do it alone
Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, or significant other. You may find that someone may have the same ones as you and you both can lean on each other to tackle it. Even if that isn’t the case, maybe you just need them there to support you and in turn, you can support them.
7. Check your progress
Keep a calendar and write down each day or week how you are doing with your progress. Make sure to check up on your resolutions because life gets busy and sometimes we forget to keep them.
At the end of the day, we are all human and sometimes we do fail. If you give up on a resolution, it should not be the end of the world. Take a step back, look at the big picture, and if you are happy without change, then so be it.
