Hey Oles! With the 86th Academy Awards coming up this Sunday, it would be easy to simply ignore all of the hubub and head off to the library to finish up some homework before the week begins. However, this year’s awards show is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ones yet – and who would want to miss out on that? Take a break, make yourself a bag of popcorn, and settle in for an evening of fabulous fashion and top-notch entertainment. Not convinced? Here are a few reasons why you should be watching the Oscars this Sunday:
Â
Ellen Degeneres will be hosting.
Daytime television host and comedian Ellen Degeneres is this year’s Academy Awards host, so you know that there will be lots of witty remarks and plenty of laughs. Previous hosts have been known for their provocative jokes and poking fun at various nominees, but Ellen will likely keep the evening light and entertaining with her self-deprecating humor and clever quips. With a stellar hosting job at the 2007 Oscars already under her belt, Ellen is sure to be a highlight of this year’s awards show.
It is one of the hottest fashion events of the year.
The Oscars red carpet is one of the most stylish, fashion-forward events of the year, and celebrities go all-out in their attempts to land on the “Best Dressed” list the next day. If you love checking out what designers your favorite celebrities are wearing, tune in an hour before the awards ceremony begins to see the red carpet interviews and decide who you think deserves a spot in the “Best Dressed” section.
Jennifer Lawrence.
Oh, Jennifer. What shenanigans will you be up to this year? Known for her hilarious celebrity photobombs, chatting about her craving for french fries and fangirling over other A-listers, Lawrence always has a memorable presence at awards shows. Last year the star notoriously tripped and fell while walking up the steps to accept her first Best Actress Oscar, for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. No matter where she goes or what she does, J. Law does it big- and being up for another award this year, I can’t wait to see what antics she pulls on the carpet and potentially while receiving her second Oscar.

This was a year of brilliant filmmaking.
Don’t forget that this is an evening meant to recognize the year’s achievements in the film industry. It has been quite a year indeed, with nine spectacular movies nominated for Best Picture. This Academy Awards is also unique in that there is no clear favorite for a winner – speculations for who will take home the coveted Best Picture Oscar are across the board. The incredible amount of competition these films are in goes to show how progressive they all are, and how much talent went into the creation of each one.
The presenters.
Sometimes, just watching the presenters can be a show in itself. Often coming up with creative ways to introduce their categories and other aspects of the show, they offer a few brief moments of comic relief before announcing the winner. Among the 46 presenters this year are past winners, a few teenage heartthrobs and plenty of big screen stars. If you’re looking for some eye candy, have no fear:  Zac Efron, Andrew Garfield and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be a few of the lucky announcers.
The performances by the Best Original Song nominees.
Karen O, Pharrell Williams, U2 and Idina Menzel will all take the stage this year to perform their pieces nominated for Best Original Song. I’m personally most looking forward to Pharrell’s performance of “Happy” from the animated film Despicable Me 2 and Idina Menzel’s delivery of “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen. With the amount of hype both of these sensational tunes have been receiving, it will be fun to see them carried out live. Karen O and U2 are also sure to be crowd-pleasers, with tracks “The Moon Song” and “Ordinary Love” offering some variety to the mix.
