This is an article for all the Oles out there who want to watch a scary movie without getting traumatized. I’m with you. I watch a scary movie and am up nights. I am convinced the same monster from the movie will suddenly pop out of my closet. The Grudge, the little boy from Insidious, Jason, Chucky…if you cringe just reading the names of these monsters, then I have a list for you. This is the top 7 spooky movies that won’t spook you…or at least not completely.

The Addams Family (1991)

Ba-da-da-dum *snap snap*…

Based off Charles Addams’s cartoons, this is a classic you simply cannot leave off your must-see list. Watching this “mysterious and spooky” family, you will DIE laughing. The dark comedy has a superb cast of characters, ranging from deadpan Wednesday Addams to the detached hand, Thing, to the goofy and electrifying Uncle Fester. The group would not be complete without Gomez and Mortician Addams–a.k.a. relationship goals.

Coraline (2009)

I know you’re thinking, “This is such a creepy movie!” and yes, we were all mortified by the Other Mother as children. But, hear me out. First of all, this movie is only rated PG. Therefore, any argument of “too scary for a legal adult” is not going to pass. Secondly, the story of Coraline is bewitching and relatable. Coraline is a little girl who is neglected by her parents. She climbs into an alternate universe where everything is perfect and yet…something is off. This is an idea we can all relate to–especially as college students. Some of us feel neglected from our family, our friends, that cute boy in our German class. Some of us wish we could throw aside our studies and find a universe where life is perfect. I personally would prefer if in my alternative universe, people didn’t have buttons for eyes, but that’s just me.

Scary Movie #1,2,3,4…(2000-)

If you are too much of a wimp to see an actual scary movie (no judgement here!), I highly recommend the Scary Movie franchise. They are parody versions of your favorite (or least favorite) horror flicks. Actors such as Anna Faris, Charlie Sheen, Kevin Hart, and Queen Latifah, guarantee amusement. Scary Movie 1 parodies Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Matrix. This movie is the most recommended of the Scary Movie films, but they will all leave you entertained…and not spooked.

Warm Bodies (2013)

This is a great movie for any tastes. It has zombies, blood and guts for the horror film lovers. It has an intriguing love story for the Rom-Com fans. Warm Bodies is the zombified comedy version of Romeo and Juliet. R, our favorite half dead friend, finds himself protecting Julie, a human, instead of eating her brains. It is a powerful love story that leaves you thinking, “Am I rooting for the zombie?”

Ghost (1990)

This movie is for anyone who watched Dirty Dancing and wanted more Patrick Swayze. The movie, Ghost, starts with Sam and Molly, a young couple in love. But, when Sam is murdered, he becomes a Ghost. Sam, with the help of psychic Whoopi Goldberg, must save his wife from his murderer. The romantic thriller was nominated for five Academy Awards.

Warning: watch this amazing movie with tissues.

Wizard of Oz (1939)

Witches. Tornados. Munchkins. Creepy flying monkeys. Talking lions. This movie has all the spooky elements. This movie should be terrifying. But, as it is one of the best known films in history, you know this to be false. Dorothy, as she journeys through the land of Oz, learns the valuable lessons of bravery, love, and devotion. It is delightful to watch Dorothy grow up on screen, surrounded by a colorful pallet. This is a movie that still resonates with us almost 80 years later. We still sing along to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and dance down that yellow brick road.

Tip for watching: Look up trivia for the movie. Did you know Dorothy’s iconic dress was actually pink and blue? It was easier than white to shoot in Technicolor.

The Others (2001)

This movie is brilliant. It will freak you out slightly. However, I put it on the list because I think it is worth the watch. Nicole Kidman lives in a mansion with her two children during World War II. The movie is set in the fall, where the cold and dreary day never seems to end. The children are convinced the house is haunted by ghosts. The movie is subtle in its horror and even though it lacks in blood and gore, it is genuinely terrifying. Watch until the end; it will blow your mind.
