Ole Entertainment: 5 Fun Things To Do in Northfield This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.
Hey Oles! The year is almost over, and although finals are probably the only thing on your mind right now it’s okay to let yourself daydream about your summer plans! If you’re planning on sticking around Northfield this summer, whether you’re a townie or staying at Olaf for classes or research, here are a few ideas for things to do to keep yourself entertained in your spare time.

1. Indulge in some ice cream from Hogan Brothers.

Honestly, what can beat a heaping cone of ice cream on a warm summer night? Walk downtown to the beloved Northfield establishment, pick your favorite flavor and take it outside to lick while watching the sun set over the Cannon River.

2. Catch some live music at the Vintage Band Festival.

On August 1, head down to Bridge Square to hear some of the best brass bands in the state as well as some local favorites. There will also be food booths featuring hot dogs, brats and tacos to satisfy your hunger.

3. See the local theatre’s production of Macbeth.

Support Northfield’s local arts program and refresh your Shakespeare chops by taking in the production of Macbeth in Central Park. It will be running the weekend of June 19 as well as the weekend of June 26.

4. Go stargazing at the Goodsell Observatory.

Carleton is home to the Goodsell Observatory, which features three large telescopes that are over 100 years old. There are typically open houses on the first Friday of every month to test out the devices, so go ahead and test out your astronomy skills and see if you can find any cool constellations.

5. Pick some berries at Lorence’s Berry Farm.

Located just outside of town, Lorence’s offers raspberries and strawberries for you to pick and take home. Gather a group of friends to go spend a morning in the fields – don’t forget to take snack breaks while you’re out there!
