Everything you need to know about The Skimm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

College can be a very stressful time. There are endless hours of class, homework, studying, tests and extracurriculars. How is a woman in college supposed to stay updated on the relevant news stories in our country and the rest of the world!? The good news is there is a wonderful blog out there that can solve that problem. The Skimm is an online blog, as well as a newsletter that you can subscribe to that will help keep you updated on important news events in about a page every day.

The Skimm was started by two women in their twenties who felt that reading the news and staying updated on everything was far too time consuming. They were both working for NBC at the time, so news was a large part of their lives; they decided to create something that would help people understand the news in a more efficent format. They have done a great job of making this work. The blog takes all of the interpreting out of the news. They sift through the important events of the week or day and simplify them into a few paragraphs about what is really important.

Some categories in The Skimm include: “Things We’d like to Stop Talking About (Hello Ebola!)”, “The Mideast”, “Skim the Vote”, “Repeat After Me” and the current “Thing to Know”. The “Repeat After Me” section provides some topics that you could bring up in conversations with your friends who are extremely informed about the news. It might not give you complete insight about the topic but it can help you sound like you know what you are talking about.

The Skimm is great for us ladies in college who would like to stay informed but don’t have the time to be watching or reading tons of news every day. If you have any kind of interest in this then I suggest that you visit the website here and sign up to have the newsletter emailed to you. It is a great way to get educated on your way to class in the morning or to de-stress after a long day of classes!
