Places and Things I Wish I Knew About Freshmen Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

There are a lot of hidden beauties within the St. Lawrence campus, many of which I wish I knew about sooner. Being a second semester freshman, I have realized some of these places and wish to share them with you all.

The first place you should know about is the Spartacus Cafe.  The Spartacus Cafe is located in the Kirk Douglas dormitory hall.  They offer many options for lunch with a weekly Panini’s as their specialty. My favorite panini is the tomato, mozzarella, basil. This is a great food option on campus if you are in a rush and are looking for a filling lunch.

The second place you need to know is the Winston Room.  The Winston Room is located on the bottom floor of the student center.  During the day, this is a nice quiet place to study while having a food option close by.  At night, the room is transformed into a movie theater where free movies play a couple times a week.  I wish I knew about this sooner and didn’t waste my money by going to the movie theater downtown.

The third place you need to know about is the Sauna. As a student-athlete, I have a true appreciation for the Sauna.  This is a great place to de-stress and sweat out unnecessary toxins after a workout.  It is also a great place to meet new friends in close quarters.

The fourth place are Theme Houses. As an incoming freshman, the idea of a “themed” house was rather confusing.  Theme Houses are just another living option. They offer students a chance to live with people who have the same interests.  As a freshman you cannot live in a Theme House, but it is very beneficial to know how they work for future years.

Lastly, the fifth place are the Tree houses located in Owen D. Young library. These are study cubicles that you climb up a ladder to get to. I first noticed these on my tour when applying to SLU, however, I quickly forgot about them. I rediscovered them during finals week of my freshman fall semester and they remain my favorite study spot. They are super quiet and allow for an optimal space to get a lot of work done.
