Your Guide to Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Fall to Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter.

As this cold and frigid weather creeps upon us, it is now time to retire your fall wardrobe for a trendy and stylish winter one! For myself, I always tend to reuse and recycle my fall clothes, and then I add a touch of “winter flair”. Let’s get into it!

I’m currently located in New York City, and you know what that means, you HAVE to have your black puffer jacket. C’mon, it’s a given. Black puffer jackets complete any winter look. Do you feel like stepping out in sweatpants? That’s alright, throw on your black puffer and some gold jewelry, and now you have a fit. Doesn’t matter what type of puffer you have, black, brown, white, cropped, long, it will complete and add to ANY look. You can find affordable ones on ASOS and Amazon, or if you want to splurge, you can buy the famous The North Face black puffer!

Just because it’s absolutely freezing outside, doesn’t mean you can’t dress cute! Layering your outfits can keep your outfit looking fashionable without looking like you’re about to be overcome with frostbite. Basic colored long-sleeve shirts, long-sleeve turtlenecks, flannels with cool colors, sweaters, and hoodies are key. I like to find affordable ones from H&M, ASOS, Amazon, and Target.

Are you a skirt-wearer? You may think that it’s too chilly out to continue wearing them, but you can still rock them in the winter. Every once in a while, I feel like bringing out one of my skirts to wear, and I just slip on a pair of thick tights underneath. If you don’t want to wear plain old boring tights, you can switch it up and pop out with designed tights to spice up your look.

Let’s talk shoes! I typically wear sneakers with everything. Basic white sneakers are best. 1) They go with literally everything. 2) The snow salt from the ground won’t stain your white shoes! Whenever I want to switch up what I’m wearing on my feet, I love to go with black boots. I know, that’s contradictory to what I said previously, but black boots also go with everything. They feel more “winter-y” to me rather than any other colored boots. I usually wear Dr. Martens, but there are cheaper alternatives on Amazon, and many other places as well!

I previously mentioned jewelry, but let’s talk more about it. Jewelry is not subjective to any season, so you can still wear the jewelry you’ve always been wearing. I am a gold jewelry-wearer. So I usually have my little gold hoops, gold angel number necklace, 2 or more gold rings, and a gold bracelet that I wear everyday. Accessorizing is essential to add to any look.

Do you like to wear hats? Are you feeling a bit lazy and you don’t want to do your hair? Pop on a beanie or a fitted cap and you’re set. You can find cheap and affordable hats at Target, Walmart, H&M, Amazon, or just about any retail/department store.

It’s pretty simple to make the transition from fall to winter when it comes to your wardrobe. It’s really just a bit of reusing some of your fall clothes, and adding that “winter flair” like I previously stated. Happy winter!
