Exploring St Andrews one drink at a time
Although St Andrews is small, its café culture is mighty — especially when it comes to chai latte lovers! As the leaves turn golden and sweaters make their seasonal debut, there is nothing quite like a chai to ease into the cooler months. If I had one talent, having lived in St. Andrews for the past three years, it would be knowing where to find the best chai latte. After all, I ought to after having spent enough money on the research. Here are my top five spots to grab a chai this season:
The Student Staple: Taste
As I was putting my list together, I asked many of my friends where they get their perfect chai. Everyone gave me a different list of places, and while none of us could seem to settle on an undeniable favorite, there was one location that never failed to be on each of our lists: Taste. A classic pit stop before the library, it is as much a social hub as it is a coffee shop. Their chai latte is delicious on its own, but my go-to is a dirty chai for that extra caffeine boost. The staff is friendly, but be warned, you will most certainly run into someone you know, for better or for worse.
The Underdog: Gorgeous
Not the most obvious choice, but one of my personal favourites. Gorgeous café makes a chai with the perfect ratio of chai to cinnamon, topped with a velvety texture that is hard to beat. Pair it with a bagel for a quick pre-class pick-me-up or meet with a friend in their cozy dining space. It’s not the best place for studying, but for a deli-style takeaway or casual catch-up, it’s unbeatable!
A Uni Classic. Rector’s Cafe
If you are looking for a break in between classes or a society meeting, the Rector’s chai latte is a budget classic. It’s central, affordable, and quick! I find this to be the perfect stop if I need a boost before heading off to another class. I would recommend asking for your chai extra-hot and grabbing a seat in their spacious café. The friendly staff, lively atmosphere, and central location also make it a perfect spot for one-on-one society meetings!
The Local Hub: Northpoint Cafe
North Point café is an excellent option if you want to support a St. Andrews hotspot. Not only is North Point my go-to brunch choice, but their chai lattes are also near perfect. What makes them special? The portion size. The massive mugs and the delicious chai blend make for excellent value. Add in the tempting sweet treats and its convenient location by the library, and you’ve got the perfect spot for a break with friends.
Zest is Best! We Are Zest Cafe
My number one chai in town comes from We are Zest Café. They’ve got that creamy milk texture that you expect from an amazing chai as well as the perfect hint of ginger, with a price that won’t break the bank. As far as cafés go, I think Zest is the perfect place to get some studying done, but also a fun café to meet up with friends for a chat. And the work staff is genuinely lovely! If you are looking for my #1, head to South Street and get ready to be amazed.
Whether you’re looking for a cozy study corner, a catch-up spot, or a quick takeaway fix, St. Andrews is filled with places to satisfy your chai craving. With a busy semester ahead, finding your go-to pick-me-up is essential, and if that pick-me-up is a chai, well then, I’ll see you in line!
