With Halloween just around the corner, there’s a little extra magic in the air. It’s the perfect time of year to explore how witchy practices can be incorporated into our everyday routines. From Sally Owens to Hermione Granger, there are many iconic witches we all wish to emulate, but witchcraft isn’t just a Halloween gimmick. These practices can be intentional, spiritual, and reflective rituals that bring a little more meaning into our lives. Not only do they encourage us to romanticize the mundane, but they also invite us to be more intentional with our goals, values, and emotions. By turning everyday activities into small rituals, we can create moments of calm and connection in the midst of an otherwise busy world.Â
You don’t have to believe in magic or practice witchcraft to enjoy these rituals. Beyond their spiritual significance, they offer many practical benefits: encouraging mindfulness, self-reflection, and a sense of gratitude for the world around us.Â
Grounding Practices
Grounding practices encourage us to reconnect our bodies with our surroundings and the natural world. With so much of our attention consumed by our phones and screens, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the environment around us. Taking a moment to reconnect with nature can be a simple, yet meaningful daily ritual.
There are plenty of ways of practicing grounding. Try stepping outside onto the grass with bare feet, and notice the sensation of the soil beneath you. Stand tall, pay attention to any tension in your body and take a few slow, steady breaths as you allow yourself to relax. Take a moment to listen too. Without music, podcasts, or the familiar noise of your phone, try to notice the sounds around you: the birds chirping, leaves rustling, or the wind blowing through the trees. Rather than rushing on to the next task, allow yourself to be fully present and at peace in the moment.
Energy CleansingÂ
Energy cleansing rituals can allow you to acknowledge difficult feelings leftover from the day, and symbolically let go of them. In many witchcraft traditions, water is associated with cleansing, renewal, and purification, making it a natural element to incorporate into a personal ritual.Â
One simple way to practice this is in the shower. While this might sound silly, try imagining the day’s worries and frustrations being washed off with the water and disappearing down the drain. Whether you view this as a spiritual practice or simply a moment to reset, the intention is the same: giving yourself permission to release what negative energy you no longer need to carry. This allows you to approach the rest of your day with a clearer mind.Â
Crystals
Crystals have a long-standing place in many contemporary witchcraft practices, with different stones traditionally associated with particular qualities, emotions, and intentions. While their supposed energetic properties aren’t scientifically proven, crystals can still act as meaningful personal reminders throughout your day.Â
For example, if you have a big presentation or a daunting social networking event coming up, you might carry a crystal that you associate with confidence or courage. Reaching into your pocket and holding it for a moment can become a small reminder to trust yourself. It gives you a slight sense of comfort and feeling of control in an uncontrollable situation. These crystals can make you feel like you are capable of qualities you don’t think you naturally have. We even have our very own crystal shop in St Andrews, where you can explore different gems and crystals and what they mean!Â
And, it doesn’t have to be a crystal! You could choose a piece of jewellery, a lucky charm, or another object that holds personal meaning. The important thing is the intention you attach to it. By giving an everyday object special significance, you create this tangible reminder of the qualities you are carrying into your day.Â
Journaling
Journaling is one of the simplest rituals to incorporate into your daily routine, and it’s something you may already do without associating it with witchcraft. At its core, journaling is about making space to reflect on your experience, acknowledge your emotions, and appreciate the little things that might go unnoticed.Â
You could start your morning by writing an intention for the day, noting what you hope to achieve or how you want to feel. Alternatively, you can keep an evening journal to reflect on what went well, what challenged you, and what you’re grateful for.Â
There doesn’t need to be a set formula. Whether you write a few lines, or fill a whole notebook with your thoughts, journaling can become a small ritual to help get to know yourself and your emotions. Sometimes putting your feelings into words can make them easier to understand, and witchcraft often seems to be about understanding and gaining strength within yourself.Â
Perhaps, everyday magic is less about casting spells, and more about learning to notice what other people might overlook. It’s about finding beauty in unexpected places, appreciating the ordinary, and becoming more in tune with ourselves and our emotions. You don’t need to commit to witchcraft, or believe in the supernatural. These rituals offer the opportunity to slow down, reconnect with the present, and bring a little more intention into our lives. Whether it’s feeling the grass beneath your feet, washing away the day’s negativity, or writing down something you’re grateful for, these small moments can take on new significance when approached with intentionality. A little everyday magic might simply be the art of finding joy and wonder in being alive.
