Classes I Wish I Would Have Taken at SPU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SPU chapter.

This is my last quarter of my undergraduate college career which is absolutely wack. I have absolutely loved most of my classes here at SPU, but being that I am graduating in three years rather than the typical four, there are some classes that I heard about and wished I could’ve fit in my schedule. If you are a freshman or a soon to be senior looking for some extra credits to take, I have made a list of classes that I either took and loved, or that I wish I could have taken during my time at Seattle Pacific University.

Classes I took and LOVED

Women in Science [BIO 3898 // 2 credits]

Professor: Cara Wall-Scheffler

The sole purpose of this class is to learn about and hear from women in science. Not only do we read about super awesome female scientists in history, but our lecture times were filled with various female scientists from around the country speaking about their career in science.

Sociology in Medicine: Inequality and Health [SOC 3205 // 5 credits]

Professor: Joshua Tom

While this class is geared toward people who will take the MCAT, I think that everyone should take it and learn about how the US healthcare system works (or in many cases, does not work at all).

Coral Reef Ecology [BIO 1121 // 5 credits // study abroad]

Professors: Eric Long and Tim Nelson

If you need to get your science credits taken care of, look no further than Belize. This 2 week study abroad during winter break was one of the best experiences I have ever had during my time at SPU. If you like snorkeling, hammocks, and beach volleyball, you should seriously consider looking into this class.

Environmental Physiology [BIO 4256 // 5 credits // September session]

Professor: Cara Wall-Scheffler

This is another class where I knocked out 5 credits in 2 weeks! This class was so interesting to me (a huge science nerd) because it focused on how the body reacts to extreme environments. You learn about extreme hot, extreme cold, high altitude, under pressure (under water), and outer space! If you are curious why you have to pee when you jump in a pool, Dr. Wall-Scheffler will gladly explain why.
