My list of favorite things and why you should make one too

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.
  1. Rainbow sprinkles
  2. Balconies (especially at hotels)
  3. Dogs (and funny dog videos)
  4. Boats (particularly on the lake)
  5. Sunsets (and sunrises, but also sleeping in…)
  6. Food inside of food (think dumplings)
  7. Chocolate-dipped sprinkle waffle cones
  8. Songs that make you feel like a badass
  9. Twilight
  10. Really really blue autumn skies

Everyone gets caught up in the fast pace of life these days; personally, I often find myself overwhelmed and drained by my “go-go-go” mindset. Although it’s cliche, taking time to appreciate the little moments is a great way to relax— and I’ve found that creating a list of favorite things forces me to do exactly that.

Writing this list requires me to think about the things I enjoy, ultimately triggering positive emotions as I find myself reminiscing on pleasant memories. Another benefit I’ve found is an increase in awareness of what creates happiness and contentment in my life. Consequently, I am more often seeking these things out to create small pockets of joy in my day.

So, If you ever feel the need to slow down and reflect but aren’t quite sure where to start, just think Sound of Music and go from there.

You’ll begin to realize there are things that make you happy outside of the daily grind that’s work, school, and TikTok (but I mean if TikTok is on your list no hate— where do you think I’m watching these dog videos…). BUT if you’re feeling the need to disconnect, this will help you reinvigorate your love for other things you enjoy. Making my list can be grounding in moments where I feel a little all-over-the-place; I see it as a reminder that I do in fact love life. I know you can’t always slow down and take a breather, but if the sky is really f*cking blue on my way to class, I’m going to glance up and think to myself, that sky is f*cking blue right now, and it will make me feel a tiny bit better.
