In the midst of our fast-paced, uncertainty-filled lives, it’s natural to question the true source of our happiness. We’re surrounded by a world that often emphasizes external achievements. Although this is not necessarily a bad thing, I’ve found that my true happiness takes the form of personal contentment. By exploring the factors that genuinely impact our happiness, we’re able to foster a deeper connection with our inner selves.

I recently started reading 30% Happier in 30 Days by Daniel Amen, which sparked my inspiration for writing this. Although I’m only at the beginning of the book, I can already feel my mindset shifting. Beyond this book, my current stage of “uncertainty” as a second-semester senior has forced me to look deep within myself. Although it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all of the external forces we encounter everyday, happiness is something that is easier to come by than we may think.

I know — being “happy” is easier said than done for many college-aged students. With that in mind, here are a few things that you can consciously do to make yourself happier — however that may look to you:

  1. Practice Gratitude: Regularly reflect on and appreciate the positive aspects of your life. Keeping a gratitude journal can help you focus on what you’re thankful for (you can find great ones on Amazon!)
  2. Cultivate Positive Relationships: Surround yourself with supportive and positive people. Nurture meaningful connections with friends, family, and those around you.
  3. Engage in Activities You Enjoy: Spend time doing things that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s a hobby, a sport, or creative pursuits, engaging in activities you love can boost your mood.
  4. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Mindfulness exercises and meditation can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. I’ve found that doing this first thing in the morning can completely transform your mindset throughout the day.
  5. Set Realistic Goals: Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable steps. Accomplishing these smaller goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence.
  6. Learn to Manage Stress: Develop effective stress-management techniques, such as deep breathing, yoga, or progressive muscle relaxation, to cope with daily challenges.
  7. Limit Negative Influences: Minimize exposure to negative news, social media, or toxic relationships that can impact your mood. Surround yourself with positivity. For me, this looks like deleting certain apps (TikTok!).
  8. Prioritize Self Care and Relaxation: Make time for activities that bring relaxation, whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk outside, or enjoying a bath.
  9. Create a Positive Environment: Surround yourself with things that bring you joy, whether it’s decorating your room, listening to music, or lighting a candle.

Happiness is a journey, and it’s okay to seek help when needed. Experiment with different strategies to find what works best for you, and be patient with yourself as you navigate the path to being the best version of yourself.
