What you should consider when registering for spring classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Registration for the spring semester is just around the corner. So before you have a panic attack trying to cram in 21 hours, take a look at some tips to help you pick out classes.

Take the classes you need for your major. This might seem obvious, but attempts to take every fun class and every required UC course under the sun may make you forget that you need to take certain classes in order to declare a major. Make sure to get everything you have to take out of the way first, then you can fill in the gaps with some fun!

Sign up for something wild. When else in your life will you be able to take a class on Middle Eastern religions or learn how to speak Russian? Probably never. College is about trying new things, so if a class sounds interesting, take it! Maybe you’ll never need to use what you learn in Intro to Photography, but it might be the most fun you have all four years.

Ask your friends what classes they loved (and hated!) Thinking about taking a certain class? Find someone who has taken it before and ask what they thought about it. While you should always do whatever you think is right in the end, hearing other’s opinions on the matter might be able to help you decide if the course is the right fit for you.

Don’t overwhelm yourself. You know yourself better than anyone else. Can you handle taking three classes back to back? Can you cope with 18 or more hours? If the answer is no, then don’t. The last thing anyone wants is for you to have a mental breakdown each day because you signed up for too much.

Know where your classes will be. You have a class in Fondren Science that ends at 12:50 p.m. Then you have a class in Dedman Rec that starts at 1 p.m. You can make that in ten minutes, right? Wrong.

Schedule times for breaks. A girl’s gotta eat! Make sure to leave yourself a lunchbreak, or at least a time where you could eat a quick snack, otherwise your days will be a lot longer.

Look up your professors. No one on this earth wants to take an 8 a.m. class. But, if the professor is truly worth it, I promise, you will find a way to get out of bed. Check out your professors on Rate My Professor to know if you should be excited, or try to find someone else that teaches the same course. Even the most boring class is better with a great teacher.

Check out the UC curriculum. The rules for fulfilling the University Curriculum have changed. Did you know that you only need to fulfill three pillars on the second level? Or did you know that you don’t need to fulfill every Proficiency and Experience sector? Make sure you’re keeping up to date on the rules, and see if any class you need to take for your major can also fulfill some UC requirements. Click here for a list of UC approved courses.

With all this in mind, we know you’ll pick the right classes and have an excellent spring semester!
