Summer internship search: the struggle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Dearly Beloved,

We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of “syllabus week.” With a flurry of travel, mixers and new schedules, the most care-free week of the semester has come to a close. It is time to break out your highlighters and, if you’re like me, finally buy some textbooks. Long days of reading and note-taking are ahead with spring break only a distant promise of relief.  As the heavy dose of academia sets in, most of us are now lifting our eyes to the next hurdle we’ll have to leap- finding a summer interenship. Here is what is in store for us poor unfortunates, as told by the internet.

You realize it’s time to plan more than the next 24 hours of your day.

So you give yourself a sweet pep talk.

Because, after all,  this semester is different. Watch out, future employers!

Then you have no idea where to start.

And your friends start mentioning they’ve had their summer plans figured out for months.

“What could I, as an employee, bring to the table?” you think to yourself. “What have I learned about myself in college?”

After much agonizing and neurotic re-reading, you get bold (read: “give up”) and send in your applications and resume.

For weeks you’ll leave every interview second guessing yourself and freaking out as you wait to hear back.

Maybe there is still time to go abroad and avoid the real world for one more summer!

It’ll all be worth it when someone finally gives in and hires you so you can start planning fun summer things- like vacations.

Or maybe you’ll be unemployed. The future is a mysterious place and I don’t know you that well.

Good luck!
