Mistakes We Are All Bound To Make In College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Regardless of how perfect other people look showing up to class, or how many people around you seem to get A’s without studying, you will learn that everyone makes mistakes and that no one has their life 100 percent together. During college, even that girl who seems to have it all together will make the following mistakes at one point or another.

Failing to Figure Out Time Management

There will be days when you feel overwhelmed because you probably should’ve done homework over the weekend, but put it off. There will also be days where you feel on top of your game because you prioritized your time. Just make sure you end up with more organized days than stressful days. You will thank yourself later when you feel well rested and get an A on that test!

Choosing to Pull An All-Nighter and Failing the Test Anyway

Everyone will probably end up pulling an all-nighter at some point in their college career, whether it be for an essay, a final or just loads of busy work you put off until the night before it was all due. Despite how appealing it might seem to go out every night of the week, it won’t seem appealing when you’re on your third shot of espresso and are trying to think straight at 4 a.m.

Sleeping Through Your Alarm and Missing Class

This happens to the best of us, whether it is sleeping through the alarm or setting your alarm for 7 p.m. instead of 7 a.m. Regardless, most teachers have an attendance policy that gives you at least 1 unexcused absences, so don’t worry if it happens once. Just set multiple alarms next time!

Partying a little too hard

Everyone has nights when they don’t realize how late they stayed out, until they cruise into their dorm at 3 a.m., but make sure that you plan ahead and factor in a nap or two for the next day. Naps are always a good idea, no matter what the high school version of yourself thought.

Pretending To Be Someone You’re Not Just to Fit In

Whether it is trying to fit into a new friend group you met in your dorm, a new club, a sorority or a sports team, we have all had that moment when we say something and realize we would never say that but we just did to try and look cool for these people. College is a great place to find your niche. College is also such a large place that you can find other people who value your uniqueness and who probably share a lot of your beliefs and interests. Don’t worry if you aren’t satisfied with the people you met in your first 24 hours at school. You have four more years at school to meet friends you will have for life.

Overcommitment in an Attempt to Fill Your Resume

Club rush can be overwhelming and obviously you signed up for those 15 clubs to get the free stuff that came with writing your email down. Many people can attest to the fact that overcommitment is real, and even though filling your resume sounds appealing, it shouldn’t be your number one goal freshman year. Find two or three activities and clubs that really appeal to you, and stick with those two or three. Run for office in these clubs and grow your resume by taking over different roles within a few clubs! Follow your passion and success will find you. We followed our passion for writing and look where it took us! If you want to join us in our passion for writing, apply to write for Her Campus SMU today here.

Her Campus SMU hopes you all are having a great start to the school year, and remember that if you have made any of these mistakes, it is not the end of the world! Many of our HC writers have made these mistakes and can promise that life goes on.
