Frequent Thoughts I Have During My First Year of College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Your first year in college can be chaotic, fun, scary, and amazing, all at once. It can be difficult living away from your family and having to take on this “adult” thing by yourself. But luckily you are not alone and there are plenty who relate… well, just about your entire freshman class. Thoughts pop into my head daily, about the most random things. Because these thoughts happen so frequently and I know SO many people who have the same experiences, I decided to share. I hope you can relate!

Thoughts going through my head about my first-year:

Am I even going to graduate?

How is spring break over already?

Can I do this college thing?

Am I in the right place?

Do I really need a degree?

Omg, only 7 more weeks until I’ve finished my first year!

Okay, if I take a nap right now I can still get 4 more hours of studying in…

Maybe I should work out some more?

Are jobs going to REALLY look at my freshman year G.P.A.?

How many activities should I be involved in?

Am I in enough?

Did that cute boy in my psych class really look at me today?

Am I the only person lost in Calculus?

No no I can’t be the only one… right?

Why do people ask such dumb questions?

Wait… do I ask dumb questions?

I have got to STOP overthinking things.

Do I need to know what I want my major to be?

Am I doing enough?

Will I be happy in the future?

Should I apply to the business school?

Oh gosh I have work tonight.

Maybe I can stay home and say I’m sick…

NO NO NO go to work!!!!!

Don’t be lazy!

Okay, I can be lazy if I worked out today.

Should I work out today?

Maybe take a class… maybe run… or maybe just eat pizza…

Yes, definitely pizza.

Why did this semester go by so fast?

Are the next three years going to go this fast too?

Will people ever act like adults?

Are adults even adults?

Will we ever get to be adults?

What happens after college?

Will I get a job after graduation?

How do I apply for a real job?

Why am I thinking about this right now?

I need to focus on the now.

I do not need to write this down, I’ll remember it.

I didn’t remember it, SH*T!

Writing down these random thoughts made me realize how much is on a college student’s plate. If you catch your mind wandering, take a deep breathe and remember why you are going through four additional years of school. Focus on your long term life goals and plan and this will help you recenter your focus. If you are one of those people, like myself, who will always have something running through your head, try yoga! I know it’s a bit cliche but it helps so much to clear your mind and find inner peace. This might then translate to outer peace and help make everything you’re doing so much better.
