5 Ways to save money without limiting your shopping

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

The SMU campus is a in a prime location for shopping. To the north we have NorthPark Center, to the east Mockingbird Station and to the west is Snider Plaza. Oh, and we can’t forget the Galleria which is just a 15 minute drive away. So, with a number of great places to shop all around us, nothing should limit our shopping habits– not even a cash shortage. Here are five ways to save money without cutting back on your number of purchases:

1. Use Your Student ID

Your student ID is always on you– use it! It can save you money at places you wouldn’t even expect. Your student ID can get you a discount at the Apple Store, La Madeline, Subway, Qdoba, H&M, J. Crew, on Amazon and the list goes on. There are a number of places that your student ID can get you deals, but if you don’t ask for the discount, you probably won’t get it.

2. Google Coupons

You’d be amazed the number of coupons that are in the palm of your hand. Literally, they’re on your phone. Whenever your in line to check out simply Google the store you’re in and add the word “coupon” and more likely than not you’ll get some sort of discount code to show your cashier. Hobby Lobby always has an online 40% off coupon; you can even divide your purchase into two and use two coupons for multiple savings.

3. Add the APPs

If your favorite stores have apps, download them. This is a great way to earn points towards a discount, or learn about secret sales. Who doesn’t love sales?

4. Press the Follow Button

While your following-to-follower ratio may suffer from this, your wallet will gain. Follow your favorite stores on their social media accounts to learn about the latest deals and in-store sales. Sometimes, you can even get a discount by just showing the sales associate that you follow the store’s account.

5. Sign up for the Email List

As annoying as they may be, the emails from random stores can actually be super beneficial to your budget. When you actually open them, rather than sending them straight to spam, you might find some exclusive deals that you can only learn about through that store’s emails. The loaded inbox is worth it if you can save some cash.
