4 Weird things college changes about you

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

The end of the semester is nearing, a big milestone for many first-years. Finally everyone is caught up and assimilated! But going back home may reveal some weird things going to college has changed about you.

1. Your vocabulary

You’ve likely been living in an environment where everyone is from the same place and has the same vocabulary. But now? At SMU, we’ve got people from all over the country and around the world! While “OMG” and “LOL” are pretty universal, your Texas friends have probably gotten you saying “y’all”, your Californians might have got you into terms like “totes” and “AF”, and who knows what you’ve passed onto your pals!

2. How you feel about Mom and Dad

Now that you’re not living with them, your perspective on your parents has probably changed. Often, the relationship gets better! Now that they aren’t right there in the next room, you may realize just how much you need them to help you make big decisions or figure out how to wash that adorable new shirt you got at NorthPark. Not to mention the rush of gratitude you feel when they feed you food cooked at home, giving you a break from the consistent string of dinner from Mac’s place for the last week and a half.

3. How you spend your money

In high school, a ton of your money probably went to paying for gas and food for after school. Now, those funds have likely started going more to Uber and getting drinks, whether that’s three Starbucks drinks to keep you awake or three shots to keep you in the party zone.

4. Where your priorities go

Class is super important, especially for the courses that give you a limited number of absences before you get an automatic failing grade. But sometimes, it’s really hard to choose between two of college students’ favorite things: food and sleep. Are you more hungry than tired, or are you more in need of a long nap than lunch?
