Since coming to college, there have been a few traditions that my suitemates and I have picked up that I think are essential in making the college experience more random and fun. The longer that I am at college, the more I have realized that most random things are what make for the best memories.

Eating Papa John’s at 12 am

We have learned that Papa John’s pizza tastes the best post-11pm as a midnight snack. After a long day of classes or a lazy Saturday, there is honestly nothing better than a hot pizza will all of your closest friends whilst talking about your day. Be sure not to get as addicted as we have though!

Having daily dance parties

I have learned that the best way to cure a bad day, relieve stress, or brighten your mood is to blast your favorite song and have the biggest dance party of your life. They have honestly been some of the most fun moments that I have had in college; just dancing and singing out all my problems. College is hard and stressful; it puts a damper on your mood, classes kick your butt, but dancing will always be a life-saver.

Taking lots of naps

This is for sure my favorite one. I have quickly learned that no matter what your sleeping patterns were before arriving at college, they will go out the window, and very soon the new “normal” will be about five hours of sleep. So finding an hour or two to take a quick nap every other day or when I feel like I need it has been a life changer. It has allowed me to be present, mentally and physically, in all situations and to be able to have those late night talks with the people that live on my floor.

Buying ready-to-eat mug brownies

Although I had no idea what these were before coming to college, they have completely changed the game. If you are in college or headed to college, this needs to be a new normal on your grocery list. These mug brownies allow you to make brownies with simply water, a mug and a microwave. On those late nights when you are up studying for a test or it’s 2 am and all you want it some chocolate, then having these on hand is a MUST!

Finding time for random art projects with friends

Lastly, find some time to do art projects with a few of your friends. It is very therapeutic for me, my friends and I do it every once in a while. We spill tea, eat some snacks, and make little art projects. Sometimes you just need to express what you are feeling with colors! And I highly recommend it.

These are a few random things that have become regular affairs in my college life. I never expected these activities to be so important, and now I cannot imagine my life here at SLU without them.
