“Heartbeat of Promise”: a Poem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SLU chapter.

Ba-bump, Ba-bump

It’s the sound of a heartbeat,

A guarantee that life goes on.

It’s life and hope and a promise

Tha-thump, Tha-thump Tha-

It’s the sound of a heartbreak,

A shallow breath before a pause.

It’s a gasp, a nod and a shaky smile

Da-dum, Da-dum Da-dum

It’s the sound of a heart in a throat,

A reminder to breathe through the bubble.

It’s choking and anxiety and a rush of adrenaline

Da-dum, Da-dum Da-dum

It’s the sound of a heart throbbing,

A broken hope that will keep on.

It’s hurting and suffering and strong

Tha-thump, Tha-thump Tha-

It’s the sound of a heart pausing,

A life caught in horror for an instant.

It’s hard and shallow and resilient

Ba-bump, Ba-bump

It’s the sound of a beautiful heart,

A painting of pain and loss. But

Its truth is deeper.

Listen to a beat,

For each tells a story.

But if you listen, you can hear,

The heartbeat of promise.
