What to Know About the New iPhone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were recently released and its all the buzz. These new phones have tons of new features as well as a new operating system, iOS8, which is also available for previous iPhone models as well. This will outline anything and everything you need to know about the new phones.

The iPhone 6 has tons of new design features. First, it is a bit larger than the iPhone 5, but it is also thinner. It is only 6.9 mm thick, compared to iPhone 5 at 7.6 mm. The sleep/wake button is not on the top of the phone anymore, but on the side. Apple chose to make this device easy to use with only one hand. In addition to the button change, if you double touch the home button, the whole screen will shift down closer to your thumb so you can navigate easier. There is a brand new Retina HD display, which enhances your viewing experience.

The iPhone 6 has a longer battery life than any previous phones, as well as new features that track your fitness: a barometer, accelerometer, and gyroscope. The camera also has tons of new features. First, the video camera has been improved adding slo-mo and a very cool new feature, time-lapse video mode. Photos now have a ‘burst mode’, which captures 10 photos per second so you can guarantee a good picture, and it also now has a 3 or 10 second selfie timer, so you can be fully ready to snap the infamous selfies we all take.

Touch ID has been improved so it now only lets you unlock your phone, but you can also approve your purchases in the AppStore as well. With this phone you get faster LTE speeds so you can roam in more places and get up to 3x faster speeds when connected to Wi-Fi.

We asked Junior Chris Chille how he liked his brand new iPhone 6. He said, “I like the bigger screen; it is definitely a lot easier to view videos and read text. You can also type incredibly fast on it. It took me a while to get used to the lock button being on the side of the phone, but I am sure I will get used to it.”

Those are just the features of the new iPhone 6. In addition to releasing this, iOS8 has also been put out. The iPhone 6 and 6 plus have iOS8 running on it, but it can be run on the iPhone 4s or newer. So if you are going to update your phone with the latest software, here is what you will be getting:

o   Smart albums to organize all of your photos.

o   The ability to add voice, video, and location easily in any Message.

o   Power to take action on your Messages, Calendar, and Email banners because they stay on the top of your screen while you are in an app and by simply clicking on it, you can respond.

o   When you press the home button twice, your recent contacts will pop up. If you swipe right, your favorites show up making them just a tap away from a call or text.

o   An improved keyboard that suggests words based on past conversations and writing style. You can simply tap them to complete your sentences.

o   Family sharing, where up to six people in your household can share purchases from the App Store.

o   The iCloud drive, allowing you to make edits on one device, and pick up on another one and all of the changes will be shown and saved.

o   An application that shows you your health and fitness data. It can work with your other fitness apps so you get all of your nutrition, fitness, and health data in one place.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6Plus are now in stores and can be purchased in Silver, Gold, or Space Gray. The 16gb model starts at $199, the 64gb model starts at $299, and the 128 gb model starts at $399.
