As a freshman, I heard about HerCampus but didn’t know much about it. I saw the HC table at the activities fair and felt welcomed by the approachable upperclassmen waving me forward, so I signed myself up. As a senior, I never realized how vital that moment was in my college career; yet here I am, Co-President and Editor-in-Chief of St. Joe’s chapter of HerCampus.
- Become a better writer
I declared English as my major from the start of college. I love to write, it comes naturally to me, and that’s why I joined HerCampus; however, I realized there’s so much more that goes into this group than the writing. We have girls of all majors – biology, marketing, communications studies, education, etc. Our diversity is the most important aspect of HerCampus. We have different interests and hobbies which is what makes our articles so interesting every week. There’s no harm in trying to write, and we can help you along the process!
- Work in social media
Social media is a huge outlet for creativity and success in our world of technology. There’s a heavy presence of influencers and bloggers who have taken over Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and more. With HerCampus, you have a chance to get involved with various social media outlets.
- Build your resume
HerCampus is a nationally-run blog written for women and by women, and there’s a role for just about everybody. We have an event coordinator, social media strategist, finance director, six editors, and countless writers. Show us your skills and prove that you’re serious, and we’ll remember you.
- Network with fellow girl bosses
We have members who graduated and attained amazing dream jobs. Here are a few: Stylist for Free People, Buyer for Lord & Taylor, and Production Assistant for NBC. These ladies were challenged to be the best versions of themselves throughout college and utilized groups like HerCampus to gain experience. They landed some incredible gigs, and so can you.
- Make friends
We’re a smaller group on campus which is ideal for making friends. You won’t be lost in a crowd. We appreciate each and every member on the team, and you will be listened to whether you have a suggestion for an event or you need advice on what to eat for lunch. We know that can be a tough decision.
- Have fun
Our group is always looking for new bonding events to do together. We recently got to know each other during “Wing Night” at a restaurant on campus. It was so fun to pig out and chat after a long day of classes and homework. We have future plans for a hip hop class, SkyZone, and potlucks!
- Host events
Not only do we hold bonding events to get to know each other, but we also host campus-wide events for the school to get to know us. Last year, we set up a table in the library where students could win different HerCampus-sponsored products, including BedHead hairspray, Boxom lip plumpers, and razors. If you’re new to the group, you probably saw us at the activities fair handing out stickers and koozies! This year we want to do more to raise funds like bake sales and a smoothie day.
- Empower women
Check out this article written by Forbes magazine about HerCampus and women in journalism. This says a lot about our founders, and we’re lucky to be working under them. Feminism is much greater than a club in college, but HerCampus makes strides for women every day. Here at SJU, we personally welcome anyone with aspirations in school and beyond.
