The Weird In-Between of Coming Back to Campus From Summer

Coming back to campus after summer somehow feels familiar and new at the same time.

You know where everything is. You know which route gets you to class the fastest and where to go when you have an awkward hour to kill between classes. You probably even know which buildings you’d rather avoid altogether.

Still, the first few days back somehow feel unfamiliar.

Maybe it’s the new people everywhere, the packed walkways or the fact that you haven’t had to think about Canvas in months. Or maybe it’s because you’re coming back a little different than when you left.

At San Jose State University, the campus is basically the same. You’re just returning to it with another semester of experience behind you.

Coming Back Isn’t Really a Fresh Start

Every August, back-to-school content makes college look like one giant reset button.

New clothes. New supplies. New schedule. A carefully planned morning routine that will probably last about a week.

There’s something fun about it. I’m definitely not against finding an excuse to buy a new notebook. But calling every semester a “fresh start” feels a little inaccurate because nobody actually comes back with a completely blank slate.

You remember the professor whose class taught you never to procrastinate on a paper again. You know whether you can realistically handle a 9 a.m. class. Maybe you changed your major, lost touch with someone or realized you actually hate the career you spent years telling everyone you

wanted.

A new semester doesn’t erase any of that. If anything, you come back knowing yourself a little better.

Everything Looks the Same Until It Doesn’t

Walking around campus after summer can be nostalgic, even if you haven’t been gone that long.

You pass the same places where completely random parts of your life happened. There’s the classroom where you gave a presentation you were convinced would be a disaster. The spot where you and your friends used to meet after class. The building you practically lived in during finals.

At the time, those moments felt huge. Now, some of them are just things that happened last semester.

That’s probably one of the strangest parts of college. Things change quickly without really announcing themselves.

One semester, you’re trying to figure out where your classroom is. A few semesters later, someone is asking you for directions.

You probably don’t notice yourself becoming more comfortable until something reminds you of how uncomfortable you used to be.

I’m Retiring “New Semester, New Me”

The beginning of a semester also creates the temporary delusion that this time, everything will be perfectly organized.

Suddenly, you’re imagining a version of yourself who has an organized routine, stays on top of every assignment and somehow balances school, the gym, a social life and everything in between. For the first few weeks, it feels like this might finally be the semester when you have it all together.

Then classes actually start.

Instead of trying to become an entirely new person every August, I think there’s something better about keeping the things that already work and being realistic about the things that don’t.

If studying at home always turns into a three-hour TikTok break, maybe you go to the Martin Luther King Jr. library. If joining too many things last semester left you exhausted, maybe your calendar doesn’t need to be full this time.

It doesn’t need to become a whole personality transformation. Sometimes you’ve just learned what works for you.

The First-Week Feeling Never Really Goes Away

No matter how many semesters you’ve done this, the first week still has its own energy.

The campus is crowded. Everyone suddenly has somewhere to be. Canvas notifications start multiplying at an alarming rate, and somehow you’ve already heard the phrase “this will be on the exam.”

Then, pretty quickly, it becomes normal again. The shortcuts come back to you. You find your usual people. You stop checking the classroom number five times before walking in.

Coming back to campus isn’t really about becoming a brand-new version of yourself. It’s more like picking up where you left off, except now you know a few more things than you did before.

And honestly, I think I like that better than a fresh start.
