I hate to admit it, but summer can’t last forever.
The long days, late sunsets, spontaneous plans and feeling like there’s always something going on eventually have to come to an end. Suddenly, it’s getting darker earlier, mornings are cooler and every store has decided it’s officially pumpkin season.
And honestly? I’m ready for it.
There’s something about fall that feels like a reset. January might technically be the beginning of a new year, but fall has always felt like another chance to start fresh, especially when you’re in college.
Entering My Fall Era
Maybe it’s the weather changing or the fact that we’re finally settling into the semester, but fall always makes me want to get my life together.
Not in a “wake up at 7 a.m. and completely reinvent myself” kind of way.
More like cleaning out the random screenshots, taking over my camera roll, reorganizing my room, finally using the planner I bought at the beginning of the semester and figuring out a routine that I can actually stick to.
By this point in the semester, you probably know what’s working and what isn’t. Maybe you’ve realized you need more time to study than you originally planned, or that staying on campus between classes is way more productive than going home.
Fall feels like the perfect time to make those little adjustments.
Romanticizing the Season
I know “romanticizing your life” gets thrown around constantly online, but sometimes making ordinary things feel a little more special genuinely makes a difference.
Get the fall drink. Put on a playlist. Take yourself somewhere to study instead of sitting in your room. Wear the outfit you’ve been waiting for cooler weather to finally justify.
Even walking around SJSU when the weather starts cooling down feels different from those first few weeks of the semester, when San Jose still feels like it’s stuck in summer.
You don’t need an entire Pinterest-perfect fall routine to enjoy the season.
Sometimes, it’s just appreciating the little things that make this time of year feel different.
Actually Go Do Something
One of the best things about fall in the Bay Area is that you don’t have to travel very far to make a day out of it.
You can spend an afternoon at a pumpkin patch, grab a seasonal drink with friends, have a movie night or take a drive somewhere that actually has fall leaves. If you’re looking for something spooky, October also means haunted houses and Halloween events start popping up around the Bay Area.
And if you’re on a college budget, your fall plans don’t have to involve spending a ton of money.
A walk with friends, baking something at home, watching a comfort movie or finding a new study spot can still give you that fall feeling without destroying your bank account.
Sometimes, the best plans are the ones that aren’t that serious.
Let Summer Be Summer
As much as I love fall, I think part of enjoying a new season is actually letting the last one end.
Maybe summer didn’t look exactly how you expected. Maybe you didn’t travel as much as you wanted, didn’t accomplish every goal you made in May or spent more time working than relaxing, and that’s okay.
You don’t have to squeeze one last perfect summer memory out of September before you’re allowed to move on.
Summer had its moment.
Now, we get cooler mornings, Halloween plans, fall outfits, seasonal drinks and the part of the semester where campus finally starts feeling familiar again.
So yes, I’m officially saying goodbye to summer.
