The Struggle of Spring Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Spring semester, that one very long time between Christmas break and summer break. From my experience, college students tend to struggle in spring semester.

I, too, am feeling the pressure and exhaust of spring semester. The excitement for the warmer weather, the long summer vacation and the celebration of the end of the year make the long-lasting semester exhausting. It’s hard to stay focused on your school work when you’re daydreaming about the sun kissing your skin and the beaches you could be on.

During this semester, many students become ill. As of right now, the flu is contaminating my hall. Girls in a narrow hall, sharing tiny dorm rooms while also sharing a communal bathroom, is already unpleasant. Exchange girls for sick girls with fevers, and it’s the worst situation possible let me assure you. All over campus, you’ll see people coughing, sniffling, looking as pale as ghosts.

Spring semester entails unpredictable weather, between January and March the weather goes from cold to hot and hot to cold. One day it’ll look like spring, the next it will look like it’s mid-winter. Some days, maybe even a week, you can last without a coat; on the turn of a dime, you better be prepared with your coat, boots, mittens and scarves. This unpredictable weather leads to allergies, sickness, inflamed asthma, the whole nine yards. The weather as well becomes exhausting and frustrating, you never know what is going to happen next. Along with this, you become stuck with a mixed closet. Sweaters and t-shirts, blouses, dresses, jeans and scarves. You never know when to begin spring cleaning.

The last struggle of the spring semester is that it is the last push. It is the final couple weeks before the three-month summer vacation. All anyone has to do is get through this semester, and then “we are free.” However because it is the last push, this semester seems to drag on and never end. Time within the final semester seems to equal a lifetime.

The final spring semester is a struggle because it is the final lap before the finish line.
