Coming to college freshman year is almost the most intimidating feeling you may experience. You’re starting out new again at a brand-new school, making friends is awkward for you and you also have your parents harping on you to get involved?
Well don’t be afraid, get involved! I waited until my sophomore year to start getting involved and taking part in things and even….working…3 jobs! I am sorry I didn’t start sooner.
I was never one to just jump into things and I was always intimidated by getting involved because I hated being the new, uneducated person on a matter. Well I got over that and just started jumping in.
I took the role of an Editor in Chief for Odyssey, another online platform and I had never had experience with this before but in doing so, I learned it was alright to ask questions and ask for help.
Start with something small and maybe even convince a friend to jump in with you. I started out with a Mini-thon group on my campus and found that it wasn’t my cup of tea because I didn’t like how it was organized.
Later, a colleague of mine asked if I wanted to join a new group he was bringing to campus called Love Your Melon. I never thought I would be so involved with a group and have the chance to do the things I am doing.
I work at my campus’s bookstore and Phonathon; while it is work, it has it’s great aspects as well like all the new and amazing people I have met. It cuts out the awkwardness and weirdness of ice breakers at social events on campus.
I also work with some SHIPmates at the local Giant!
Last but not least I joined HerCampus and work with the social media accounts which is a blessing considering I am studying Public Relations.
Don’t wait to meet amazing people and friends and find amazing things to get involved with! The sooner the better your college experience!
