5 Things to Know About SFU’s Womens Centre

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Have you heard of the Women’s Centre at SFU? If you haven’t, SFU’s Women’s Centre was started in 1974 and is run by women, for women. Be sure to check out one of our campus’ best resources for anything female-related after you read all about it here..

1. You can sleep overnight in the 24/7 Lounge

One of the features of the 24/7 Lounge (for self-identified women) are the comfy couches in the dark part of the lounge. There’s clean pillows and blankets you can grab for snuggling, but remember that it’s your responsibility to watch out for your own belongings!

2. There’s a free feminist library in the All-Genders Resource area

If you ever wanted to read up on relationships, sex, erotica, gender, or feminism, check out the feminist library in the All-Genders Resource area. It’s totally confidential, and there are no late fines! Just open an account with the Centre, and you’ll have access to the feminist library (as well as the library in SFPIRG as well).

3. There’s a free event or workshop for all your interests

Do you like cooking? Check out the free Community Cooking workshops. Interested in feminist writing? Join Inkandescent, the Feminist Writing Collective. Sign up for the Women’s Centre newsletter on their website for more events.

4. You’ll never be judged for who you are

The Women’s Centre has a five-point mandate: Pro-feminist, Sex-positive, Trans & Intersex inclusive, Pro-choice, and Anti-racist. According to their website, these key parts of the Women’s Centre “informs how we do our work, what services we provide, and how we treat one another”. Read more about the five-point mandate here.

5. You can take advantage of the all the resources!

Many of my female friends have used the Women’s Centre for all sorts of reasons. Whether as a study spot, resource area, a safe haven, or just a place to nap, the Women’s Centre is a welcoming space for all self-identifying women in the SFU community to hang out.

“I’ve been using the Women’s Centre as a study and nap space since my first year at SFU, and it honestly feels so nice to be away from the busyness of the campus and to just be in a quiet, welcoming space. I really want to go to start going to the events held at the Women’s Centre too!❜❜ —Anonymous SFU Student”

Now that you know all about the SFU Women’s Centre, go visit it’s All-Genders Area and the 24/7 Lounge in the Rotunda and tell all your friends about it!
