Ways to Maintain Mental Health During the Quarantine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFA chapter.

As you all know, we are currently in the middle of a global pandemic. I don’t know about you all, but I have had a difficult time adjusting to this new way of life. However, it is important that we keep some semblance of normalcy so here are the following ways that you can take care of your mental health during the quarantine:

1. Do homework

Now as much as we all hate homework (or at least I do), this is still a necessary part of our lives. During this trying time, we all have plenty of assignments, quizzes, and exams to keep us busy. DON’T get behind on homework and do NOT procrastinate! It’s much harder doing all of our classes online but remember to stay disciplined and stay motivated! I added this to the list because schoolwork can often have a detrimental effect on our mental health but as long as you stay organized and stay on track, your mental health will be much better!

2. Go for a walk

*GASP*. Am I really suggesting that people go OUTSIDE during this time? Why yes, I am. You are still allowed to go outside to get some fresh air. HOWEVER, you should make sure that you are keeping a social distance of six feet. This is also not an excuse to go see your man. Now is not the time.

3. Do grounding exercises

As someone that has been EXTREMELY anxious during this whole time, I have really appreciated that I know how to ground myself. One technique to use to ground yourself is to use the 5-4-3-2-1 method. 5 things you see, 4 things you smell…you get the idea. Using these methods have significantly reduced my anxiety.

4. Know that you are not alone

While it may seem like the world is completely falling apart, just know that there are so many people that you can reach out to for help. Don’t hesitate to call a friend, a family member, or a mentor. Even though we’re going through peculiar times, remember: your health, both physical and especially mental health, comes first.

Hello Everyone! My name is Laura Restrepo and I go to SFA. I plan to major in psychology so I can use my degree to help others and make this world a better place. I am a writer for Her Campus. I love to read anything and everything whether its books, magazines, blogs, fan-fiction, journals, etc. I enjoy all types of music; I am open to anything. I am also a huge nerd for Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings/Hobbit series. In conclusion, the perfect day for me consists of these things with coffee and cold weather.
