Insecure Viewing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seton Hall chapter.

Any time someone asks me what my hobbies are watching television is the first thing that comes to my mind. I have notoriously watched everything on Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime and Hulu. I also frequent television network websites that allow shows to be streamed.

Last weekend I attended the Black Solidarity Conference at Yale. The conference kicked off with a screening of Issa Rae’s new HBO show “Insecure.” I like the show so much because it seems so real. The issues that Issa and her friends face are situations that are easy to connect with. The show is hilarious and I laugh from beginning to end. After watching episode 6, Jay Ellis (who is even more beautiful in person) participated in a discussion with the audience about playing Lawrence on the show as well as his personal life. I did not know he was going to be there so when he walked out my heart skipped multiple beats.  Issa Rae and is queen without personally knowing her I truly believe that but Ellis reiterating that made me really happy.

The discussion covered many topics about the importance of diversity and how HBO is working to convey diverse experiences in their productions. It was really cool to hear his opinions about the show. I gained a lot of insight into the shows goals and plans for the next season. Representation is so important and people need to see their realities on screen. The season finale ended with a lot of unanswered questions and Ellis gave great explanations on a lot of the questions viewers of the show have been thinking about. Insecure is a phenomenal show and everyone should watch! My biggest regret of the weekend is not waiting in line to take a picture with him out of fear of fangirling too hard.
