How to Practice Self-Care as a College Student in a Pandemic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

While college is a time in our lives full of new experiences, self-discovery, and making new friends, it can also come with challenges. The piles of homework, hours of studying, sleep deprivation, and endless responsibilities never seem to cease. But with a little help from our friends, exercising, and taking lots of naps, college seems more manageable. These things can be considered self-care, as it’s something we do to make ourselves happy and better our well-being. Self-care is a crucial part of life because it helps better one’s mental and physical health, increase productivity, and boost one’s mood. However, what are we supposed to do now with the stress of going to school during a pandemic on top of the typical demands of college? Here is a list of self-care ideas that are COVID-19 safe:

  1. Do a spa night with your roommate. Paint your nails, do a face mask, do a hair mask, or take a bath!
  2. Watch a movie or show on Netflix Party with your friends from school or home. Stay connected with your friends from the comfort of your own homes while watching a movie or show you have been dying to see!
  3. Do a technology detox for a few hours. Put your phone down and start a new book, color, do yoga, or meditate!
  4. Go on a hike with a few friends (while following social distancing guidelines). Find a new spot in town and get active outdoors!
  5. Go online shopping. Browse on your favorite stores’ sites and treat yourself to some new clothes—you deserve it!
  6. Call a family member or friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while. Checking in and catching up with someone will brighten their day along with yours!
  7. Paint something. Whether it’s on a canvas, an old record, or a pair of sneakers, getting creative will instantly relax you!
  8. Take a nap. Extra sleep never hurt anybody!
  9. Journal. Grab a notebook and write about how your day went, how you’re feeling in that moment or do some self-reflection—it’s like free therapy!
  10.  Clean and/or rearrange your room. Change your bed sheets, declutter, put away the clothes that are scattered everywhere, or redecorate your room!

I hope that you try at least one of these ideas and continue to remind yourself that you are doing your best in unprecedented times like these! Happy self-care!
