7 Lesser Known Bands and Artists You Should Be Listening To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

As a music junkie, I feel it as part of my melodious duty to spread the word of unique, new, and beautiful music with people. These are some of my favorite low-key bands and artists that I think others need in their lives. Hope you’ll give ‘em a listen! :-)

1. Dua Lipa

  • Vibe:  indiepop, GNO, dancing, party, pregame
  • Similar to: Tove Lo, Jonas Blue, Sia

Listen to: “Be The One” / “Last Dance” / “Hotter Than Hell”

2. Academy

  • Vibe: beachy, relaxing, day-drink, reggae
  • Similar to: Aer, Shwayze, Dirty Heads

Listen to: “High Tide” / “Hold Me Down” / “Panoramic” / “Sweet Talk”

3. Tame Impala

  • Vibe: psychedelic rock, trippy, relaxing, jammin’
  • Similar to:  Alt-J, M83, Mac DeMarco (and even like the Beatles on their older albums)

*Honestly, this band is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. In a sense, they take getting used to due to their completely unique sound, but I am hooked.

Listen to: “The Less I Know The Better” / “Love Paranoia” / “Reality in Motion”

4. St Lucia

  • Vibe: feel good, running, synthpop, electronic
  • Similar to: Two Door Cinema Club, Passion Pit

Listen to: “Elevate” / “Dancing on Glass” / “Wait For Love” / “September”

5. Bad Suns

  • Vibe: alternative rock, driving down the highway, (and his voice is amazinggggg)
  • Similar to: Grouplove, New Politics, The 1975

Listen to: “Daft Pretty Boys” / “Transpose” / “Heartbreaker”

*Literally anything off their Language and Perspective album OR Disappear Here album. They rock.

6. Thomas Jack

  • Vibe: deep house, summer, groovy, beachy remixes, day drink
  • Similar to: Kygo, Felix Jaehn, Matoma

Listen to: “Rise up” / “Rivers” / “Little Talks – Thomas Jack Remix”

*Also check out the “Best of Thomas Jack Continuous Mix” on YouTube. That playlist is the anthem of my sophomore year.

7. Rationale

  • Vibe: chill, alternative, soul, electronic rock
  • Similar to: Young the Giant, Bastille

Listen to: “The Mire” / “Fuel To The Fire” / “RE.UP”
