It’s a new year and a new decade. Which means it’s time to think about resolutions and goals!! Now, of course those goals don’t have to be super stressful or exhausting. Typical resolutions such as “exercise more” or “lose weight” don’t have to be your only resolutions for 2020. Here are some ways to start off the new year right:

Be Kind to Yourself

We all go through self-deprecation and will talk bad about ourselves for whatever reason. It’s hard to feel positive about yourself when you’re going through a rough time and it affects you in a big way. We all make mistakes and have flaws and we shouldn’t look down on ourselves for that. Stop being so hard on yourself. Everything will turn around at some point and you won’t have to feel sorry for yourself.

Take Care of Yourselves and Take Breaks

I think that self-care and taking more breaks will be good for those of you who have overworked yourselves. Please take care of yourselves. Get plenty of sleep, make sure you eat and not just snacks; I’m talking actual meals, and stay active and healthy. Also, take a break or two from social media occasionally. Social media can be so toxic now and then and coming from someone who experiences anxiety and major F.O.M.O (Fear of Missing Out), I can say that avoiding it for a period of time will be a good idea. I took a break from Instagram and Facebook for a week a while back. A whole week of not having to scroll through other people’s lives and compare myself to them makes a huge difference for yourself.

Cut Ties with Toxic People

This can also be referred to just staying away from toxic or negative people in general. But I’m mainly referring to those friends who aren’t your real friends because they either make you feel bad about yourselves or they’re flaky and aren’t ever around or whatever. Fake friendships are the worst and you shouldn’t have to put up with them. I cut ties with a few friends of mine who were just toxic and fake friends who have put me down. Stick with the friends who stay true to you.

Get Organized

Clean your room and organize your workspace. The new year is a good time for organization. Pack away anything from last year that you hardly use and make space for new stuff. Clean out your email inbox and electronic files on your computer. Organize end-of-year records. Dust, vacuum and decorate in order to get those productive juices flowing.

Commit to a Work-Life Balance

Make sure to get all your work done, whether it’s schoolwork or work at your job. But also, be sure to enjoy life outside of work, such as hang with friends or relax. This year set a work-life plan that will enable you to nurture relationships and interests outside of work as well as take care of business.

Treat Others the Way You’d Want to Be Treated

There is absolutely no time for hate or negativity. The new year is a time to start over, if needed, and Please be kind to one another. I feel that we need more kindness in the world this year. If you’re nice and/or respectful to others, you’ll get the same thing in return.

The process of translating various topics into a collection of garments after intensive research and visual development, makes me feel empowered because it is a unique medium of self-expression.
