Storage Comes After Decoration: How to Make the Most of Your Small Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD ATL chapter.

It’s no secret that dorms rooms are not as spacious as we’d like them to be. Here are a few hacks to make your dorm feel less like a closet and more like your home for the next year.

Under bed storage. Yes, there are stilts you can buy to give you a few inches of extra space, but wait… there’s more! Raise your bed as high as it can be raised and underneath is a whole new world. Okay, not really, lol, but you can now store your storage bins, clothes hamper, or even your mini fridge underneath.

Hanging Organizers- traditionally these are used for organizing and storing your shoes and clothes. Yes, very helpful, but why stop there? You can also use these hanging organizers for your snacks and cleaning supplies.

Inventory Check- If you’re like me, after I’ve moved in and have gotten settled, I realize I’ve forgotten something. No worries I can just go buy it, right? Yes, but make a list and check it twice. Remember, you’re already low on space and you don’t want to buy anything that will take up too much room. Refunds are on the way and as tempting as it may be, don’t buy anything you don’t need.

Hey Roommate- Similar to tip three, check in with your roommate(s) to see which items you guys can split the cost on. Another option is to offer to pay this time and your roommate can get it the next time. Either option you choose,  it saves on space and costs.

Get Creative- We are in art school after all so getting creative should not be a problem. Whether you’re a fashion major, illustrator, or architect in the making, you could use the practice. Who knows, you may be creating the next big thing.

Your dorm is now your home for the next nine months. Don’t let the lack of space cramp your style. Have fun finding new ways to store and organize your living quarters. Alright, SCAD’s next top interior designer; get designing!

I am Mia (same letters rearranged). I'm a part-time Grammarian, Pro Black, Christian, Feminist, Ambivert, Empath, and Lover of Life. If I'm not in class or working, I can usually be found napping or binge watching something on Netflix, lol.
High-spirited fashion designer with sound knowledge about the management and promotional aspects of the industry. My inquisitive nature enables me to discover efficient ways of streamlining marketing approaches to reach target audience. The process of translating various topics into a collection of garments after intensive research and visual development, makes me feel empowered because it is a unique medium of self-expression. However, I am fully aware of the importance of marketing a product in order to gain the best results which makes me equally passionate about both the aspects of Fashion World
