Why Taking A Break Can Feel Like Being Lazy

Why is it that taking a break from the crazy rush of life can feel like you’re being lazy? I believe one of the hardest parts of being in college is feeling the constant need to always be doing something. Taking a break and making time for yourself to do things that make you feel centered and calm are important. Often, with the craziness of college, extracurriculars, and work, it’s hard to make sure you’re prioritizing yourself. Sometimes when I do allow myself these small moments of rest in between my crazy schedule, I feel like I’m being lazy. It’s like my brain is constantly on overdrive and screams at me when I take a break for even a second. I don’t feel like I’m alone in this feeling, but if I am, how do I break the cycle?

Over the last few years of being in college, I’ve learned that I enjoy being busy. I like constantly having things to do and staying active. I like going to classes (mostly) and having dance at night. I enjoy going to the library between classes and spending hours getting my work done. The idea that I’m keeping busy and not being “lazy” helps ease my mind.

For the last week or so, I’ve been sick and haven’t had a ton of energy to do things. I’ve skipped a few of my classes and spent a lot of time in my townhouse doing homework in my room. During this time, even though my body has been so physically tired, I’ve felt like I should be up doing more things. My brain has been spiraling that I haven’t been as active and busy this week.

Why is this?

I think part of the reason rest can feel uncomfortable is that we have learned to connect our worth with how much we accomplish. We are constantly encouraged to work hard, reach our goals, and make the most of every opportunity. These things can be positive, but they can also create the feeling that we are never doing enough. Instead of asking ourselves whether we are happy or healthy, we start asking whether we are being productive. Without even realizing it, we can begin to measure our value by how busy we are.

Another reason taking a break can feel like being lazy is that we often believe rest has to be earned. We tell ourselves that we can relax after finishing everything on our to-do list, but there is almost always something else that needs attention. This can create a cycle where we keep pushing ourselves without ever feeling like we have done enough. Rest becomes something we have to deserve instead of something we naturally need.

Taking a break does not mean we are giving up or falling behind. It means we are giving ourselves time to recharge. We deserve to enjoy our lives without feeling guilty every time we are not working toward something. Rest is not laziness. It is a necessary part of being human.
