Ever since I was a child, I have always dreamed of having a friendship where I felt seen. To be friends with someone who knew what I was thinking without having to say it, and someone who made me laugh until I couldn’t breathe. I’ve been lucky enough in my life so far to find many amazing friends like this, but today I’d like to talk about one friend in particular.
I met this girl in such a random way. It wasn’t planned or forced; our friendship formed completely out of happenstance. I was scrolling on Facebook, looking eagerly for a freshman year roommate. I felt I had things in common with many of the girls, so I reached out to a few. None of them ended up working out, and I remember feeling like the clock to find a perfect match was ticking down. I then stumbled upon my future roommate’s profile. I didn’t know at the time that adding her on Snapchat would be one of the best decisions I ever made. We didn’t have a bunch in common, to be completely honest, and like every other girl first starting college, I was terrified I would encounter one of those roommate horror stories. Luckily, I decided to room with someone who changed my life for the better in so many ways.Â
I could sit here and easily list off a thousand things I love about my roommate, but the quality of hers that has had the biggest impact on me is the way she notices. It’s nice to be best friends with someone who makes you feel seen. There are days when the world just feels heavy, and I don’t want to talk; she notices. There are days when I miss my family, and I just need someone to take my mind off it; she notices. Even with everything she has going on, when I need someone, she notices, and she’s there. College can be scary and overwhelming sometimes, and having someone who feels like home to stay by your side makes life just a little bit easier.Â
I always like to look back on that simple moment in time when I first decided to DM her. Out of all of the people on that interest page, I happened to pick my future best friend. It’s times like those when I truly do believe in fate, because I can’t imagine college without her being a part of it. Almost every beautiful moment I’ve been lucky enough to experience here over the last three years have been with her. It really is an amazing thing to have someone you feel like you can always count on. Beyond this, it makes me happy to know that I’m friends with someone who really sees me. I’m forever grateful for St. Bonaventure for bringing me a lifelong friendship, and I’m forever thankful for 18-year-old me taking a chance on a random girl from the Facebook page.Â
Thank you to my roommate for making me feel seen.Â
My love for you will never run out.Â
