November and December can be tough months for college students. From group projects to final exams, school ramps up, and an unmistakable feeling of stress is lingering in the air. I am not an exception.
This time has been filled with classes, meetings, homework, more meetings, and even more homework. It can be exhausting.
There are moments when it would feel so good to just throw my hands up and scream, “SCREW THIS!” But then I come back to my senses.
I am in love with my future.
I will take every tough assignment, late night, and stressful club meeting to get to where I want. I have set myself up for such success that it really is in my hands to make it happen.
I am a 4.0 triple major, the editor-in-chief of the oldest student-run literary magazine in the nation, president of a political club on campus, vice president of a campus book club, a writing tutor, and, to top it off, an editing chair of the SBU chapter of Her Campus. This is not to brag about my accomplishments, but to show how hard I am working to make my dream career a reality (I also really like being involved on campus).
Taking on all of these responsibilities has been extremely tiring. While I have had tremendous help from peers and mentors, it is a lot of work.
But while reading Mackenzie Ingalsbe’s article “Why TikTok’s ‘In Your 20s’ Trend Hits So Much Harder Than You’d Expect“, I remembered that I am in control. She reminded me, “It is important to make the decisions now because they will shape your future… Decisions can be scary, but it’s important to remember that each decision is your own… You will shape your own future by making the hard and uncertain choices.”
Each small choice I make today contributes to the life I want to live and the person I want to be.
I am working hard at school because I know that if I want to succeed in the publishing industry, I need to know my trade. I need to make connections with professors and professionals in my field of interest. I need to be on the executive board of clubs so that I can learn how to fill a leadership role and work to effectively communicate with others.
I don’t mind being so busy when I remember what I am doing it all for. I remember how badly I want to make my name in a creative niche industry.
The knowledge that what I do today has a direct impact on how I lead my life from here on out motivates me more than any quote or grade could.
Billie Eilish’s song “my future” sums up my feelings pretty well. She sings, “I’m in love / with my future / Can’t wait to meet her.”
“I’ll see you in a couple years.”
