Name: Natalie Wasek
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Roxbury, New Jersey
Major: Accounting (believe it or not)
Â
Her Campus: What activities are you involved in at Bonas?
Natalie Wasek: I am a part of Chattertons, SBU for Life, Search, and University Ministries
Â
Her Campus: What is an interesting talent you have that not many people know about you?
Natalie Wasek: My suitemate, Gabby, says I’m really good at whistling. I’m not sure if it’s true or not, but I do spend a lot of time whistling.
Â
HC: If you could travel to any country in the world, cost free, where would you go and why?
NW: Germany or China. I’m really interested in how their cultures differ from ours and I would love to experience visiting both of them one day.
Â
HC: What is your life mantra?
NW: “If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.”
Â
HC: What is your favorite part about slam poetry?
NW: I really enjoy the atmosphere and the people involved. I’m constantly learning something new and growing as both a writer and a person.
Â
HC: How did you first get into slam poetry?
NW: I wrote poetry throughout high school, but heard about slam here on our campus at Spring into Bonas. Then I actually started once the school year began. My first time actually participating in a slam was here on campus last year. I’m still pretty new to it.
Â
HC: Do you have any advice for someone who wants to try it but has stage fright?
NW: Just go for it! Everyone is super supportive and very encouraging. I still get nervous when performing, but I know that no matter what I’m just doing it for the experience and for the fun of it! It’s such a unique experience and you shouldn’t be afraid to try it.
Â
HC: Where do you draw inspiration from to write about?
NW: A lot of my writing comes from everyday events that I blow out of proportion. I tend to write a lot of abstract or absurd poems generally, and find them a lot easier to write than anything serious. Basically if I think of or hear an idea that makes absolutely no sense, I try to make some sense out of it in a poem. Â
Â
HC: What is your absolute favorite thing about Bonas?
NW: I really love the people and the friendships I have made. I’m blessed to have become friends with such great people and it wouldn’t be the same if we weren’t at Bonas. Everyone here creates such a warm atmosphere. It’s also a really pretty campus and I enjoy that a lot.Â
