9 Best Recipes to Make in a Small Kitchen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

With all the new recipes that filter through our Facebook feeds, people have gotten so crazy with the way they make things now-a-days. Don’t get me wrong; they are delicious and fun to watch. However, no one has time to make them. Everything today is about quickness and on the go. Here are a few recipes that will speed up your time in the kitchen!

1)Quesadilla

Probably one of the easiest and mindless recipes you can make. This is good for when you really have nothing in the house to make because you haven’t gone grocery shopping in a while.

Ingredients needed: Tortilla shells, shaved cheese, chicken, steak, peppers, onion, tomato, salsa, guacamole, sour cream. Any and all of these can be taken out or substituted!

You can find an easy recipe here!

2)Tomato soup and Grilled cheese

Probably everyone’s go-to in the fall/winter. All you have to do is slab some butter on two sides of bread, put a little cheese in the middle and warm up the soup. You can even cut the grilled cheese into long strips so it’s better for dipping!

Ingredients needed: Cheese, bread, tomato soup, butter.

Added ingredients: onion, tomato, ham, chicken, mayonnaise.

3)Chicken teriyaki

If you’re craving Chinese food, but don’t want to get to get takeout, this is a great alternative. The white rice takes a while but the end result is worth the wait. This is a great meal to make because there are so many different variations of it. You can make just rice and chicken; rice, chicken and vegetables; or just rice and vegetables. The flavor always depends on what kind of sauce you choose to go with it—sweet or spicy.

Ingredients needed: chicken, white rice, green peppers, red peppers, white onion, water cashews, baby corn, broccoli, snow peas, cauliflower, teriyaki and soy sauce.

4)Panini

You don’t need a “panini maker” to make a panini. All you need to do is put the sandwich on a pan and press down with a spatula. I’m telling you, it’s the same thing; there just aren’t any grill marks. The best part about them is that literally anything you like on a sandwich can be put on.

Ingredients needed: Bread, anything else that tastes good on a sandwich.

5)Egg frittata

Who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner? With the left over vegetables from the chicken teriyaki, the frittata will make your taste buds sing!

Ingredients needed: Eggs, vegetables (can be left overs) salt, pepper, hot sauce (preferably sriracha).

6)Pasta

If you can boil water and buy canned sauce, you can make pasta. Here is a little trick for checking to see if the pasta is done or not: grab a ladle, scoop a piece of pasta out of the water, blow on it to make sure it isn’t too hot and try it! It is the best way to know if the pasta is made to your preference.

Ingredients needed: pasta, sauce, salt, pepper, parmesan, crushed red pepper flakes.

7)French fries

If you have any extra potatoes or sweet potatoes in your pantry, this will be a perfect side dish for you! Put the potatoes on the cutting board and slice them into wedges. With a little bit of olive oil, salt, and an oven heated to 450o, you’ll have perfect crispy fries!

Ingredients needed: salt, olive oil, potatoes

Added ingredients: Paprika, garlic powder, pepper, parmesan, basil. (Making parmesan French fries are always a good idea)

8)Mac and Cheese

Whether it is from a box, or it is homemade, macaroni and cheese is a comfort food. Making it from the box is self-explanatory, but if you’re feeling like a chef, making it home-made isn’t hard. Elbow macaroni and a Velveeta package is all you need from the store. Boil the pasta and then throw on the Velveeta when it is done cooking (with a little bit of milk) and you’re set! No shame if you eat the whole thing in one sitting.

Ingredients needed: Elbow pasta, Velveeta cheese, milk, salt.

9)Chicken parmesan

Breadcrumbs, chicken, cheese, and sauce. All the good things in this world. Bread your chicken with some flavorful breadcrumbs, layer the chicken with sauce that’s left over from the pasta, drizzle some cheese on top and place it in the oven. In no time you’ll have a gourmet meal that will look Instagram worthy.

Ingredients needed: chicken, breadcrumbs, egg, flour, cheese, red sauce.
