During midterms, the never-ending to-do list feels impossible; My phone never stops buzzing, my brain moves at a speed that could fly a plane, and I’m completely overwhelmed. In those moments, have a list of 10 things to do to stop, slow down, and breathe.
1. Take a five-minute break
I take a deep breath and walk away from what’s overwhelming me. I will close my laptop, get a coffee or tea, go to the bathroom, or even just sit in silence. Just remembering to breathe and ground myself in the present.
2. Write everything down
When my mind feels cluttered, I open something where I can brain dump every thought; it usually ends up in the Outlook To-Do section. Seeing all my thoughts outside my brain helps me be able to work around what needs to be done or could be done tomorrow.
3. Do one small task
Pick something small and simple: it could be something as small as making your bed, maybe sending an email you need to do. Send a text or make a note of something. It gives you a source of momentum and control to move forward.
4. Change your surroundings
I will go for a walk, open my blinds and windows, go outside, and just sit in the sun. Changing where I am resets my mental space.
5. Drink water and eat something
When I am stressed, I take a small break and drink some water, and grab a snack, usually fruit or a healthy snack, also a little sweet treat.
6. Unplug for a while
I will shut my laptop, turn off my phone, and give my brain time away from screens and reset. Sometimes, even just 15 minutes allows for the noise to calm down.
7. Talk it out
Sometimes, if my mind is moving a mile a minute and I can’t write fast enough, I will record myself talking, look back, and write down what needs to be done. I’ll call a friend, take a quick study break, and talk about any problems I may have.
8. Ground yourself in the present
When your thoughts spiral, I will touch my hand to the middle of my chest and breathe in and out deeply for a few minutes. It allows my mind to stop, my breathing to slow down, and to become present.
9. Do something that makes you happy
Go to the gym or for a walk, read a book, color— these are small things I enjoy that take my mind off things that bring me stress.
10. It all doesn’t have to be done today
The world won’t fall apart if you take a break or if you submit an assignment late. You’re allowed to rest, reset, and get it done when you are ready. Only pushing once you are tired can lead to burnout, where you won’t get anything done. You are doing your best, and that is enough.
